I am committed to making SETI, and astronomy more broadly, an inclusive place for everyone. The search for life beyond Earth, after all, is very much a human endeavour!
I was one of the graduate student representatives on the Penn State Astronomy department Climate and Diversity Committee, as well as a co-leader of the Women and Underrepresented Genders in Astronomy Group at Penn State. The group lives on after my graduation – check out their website.
I was also a driver of multiple DE&I initiatives in my time at Penn State…
- Removing the GRE and Physics GRE as requirements for graduate admissions [accomplished!]
- Getting graduate student representation on the graduate admissions committee [accomplished!]
- Advocating for the refurbishment of the Davey Lab telescopes to be wheelchair-accessible [accomplished! – check out the shiny new dome]
- Creating astronomy outreach activities that are accessible to visually-impaired participants [still in-progress]
- Building all-gender restrooms in our astronomy and physics buildings [still in-progress]
- Ensuring that undergraduates feel like a respected and celebrated part of department communities [still in-progress]
